BIOGRAPHY::
Dr. Dipanwita Thakur is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering, Modeling, Electronics, and Systems (DIMES) at University of Calabria since July 2023. She is a working group member of the European Cooperation in Science & Technology in the domain of Optimal Security approaches and their impact on the user, as well as an Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Working Group member of IEEE Future Networks. Recently, she joined as a visiting research scholar in the Department of Computer Science, at Missouri University of Science & Technology, USA. The primary responsibility is to conduct research and develop innovative optimization strategies and algorithms that enhance energy efficiency in federated learning systems, with a focus on minimizing energy consumption during local model training, quantifying energy usage, and evaluating the trade-offs between energy efficiency, model accuracy, convergence speed, and robustness. Dr. Thakur has achieved the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for Associate Professor in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. In recognition of her impactful contributions, she is the Recipient of the 2025 IEEE HITC Award for Excellence in Hyper-Intelligence. She is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Professional Member of ACM. She actively serves the research community in several editorial and leadership roles. She is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Sensors Journal and Information Fusion (Elsevier). Her recent conference leadership and chairing roles include Associate Chair, CSCW 2025, Organizer & Program Chair, Workshop on Green Federated Learning: Toward Sustainable AI for a Decentralized Future, co-located with IEEE IJCNN 2025, Area Chair, International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN 2025), Session Chair, Special Session on Federated Learning on Big Data, co-located with IEEE BigData 2024, Organizer & Program Chair, 1st AIxIA Workshop on Green-Aware Artificial Intelligence (Green-Aware AI 2024), co-located with the 23rd International Conference of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA 2024), Associate Editor and Session Chair, IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2025), Advisory Committee Member, International Conference on AI and Robotics (AIR 2025). Dr. Thakur is an active member of several prestigious international working groups, including IEEE Future Networks – Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) Working Group, IEEE IoT Community - Internet of Wearable Things (IoWT), NVIDIA MONAI Working Groups on Data Quality and Federated Learning,
Prior to this, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Banasthali University, Rajasthan, for 15 years. She also worked as a Technical Support Engineer in TechMahindra, India, and Project Trainee at the Centre for Development of Advance Computing (C-DAC), India.
She received her Ph.D. from West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata, India. Her primary research specializes in Green Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a focus on federated learning,Smart healthcare using Machine Learning, specifically Performance Evaluation of Human Activity Recognition Systems. Her work aims to make AI more energy-efficient and sustainable by developing decentralized models that reduce the environmental impact of data processing. With several years of experience in smart healthcare, She has concentrated on human activity recognition, leveraging AI to enhance healthcare applications through non-invasive and privacy-preserving techniques. Her interdisciplinary approach combines cutting-edge AI methodologies with practical healthcare solutions, striving to create impactful innovations that support sustainable and effective patient care. She is the author of many scholarly research papers, including reputed journal papers, in the above-mentioned areas.
